The phone, the
cell phone, and now the Bluetooth enabled cell phone, have been a part of our
necessary business tools for years. There exist some systems today that can
help you escape the confines of simple phone use, and move to powerful control
of your communications. We will examine three that according to various
industry heavyweights, hold the most promise of delivery, and actually do
deliver the goods.
Large companies such as Verizon, and their medium
sized competition, Vonage, along with a smaller entry, Skype, are making the
VOIP user market a free for all of service. The 3G services of Verizon provide
wide area service plus V-cast for music. Verizon has a prime product associate
line, Blackberry 6750, the 7250 and the 7130e all capable of VOIP and much
more.
Vonage is medium sized in the industry but big on service. One
happy customer put it this way "This service is great! The extra services (call
forwarding, network availability, etc.) are features that would cost you quite
a bit with a landline provider (at least $10/mo), or would be totally
unavailable."
Skype is the "little software company that could" in this scenario and
they provide an excellent service. From installation to use in contacting
people around the globe, this writers personal experience is that they provide
top quality delivery via the PC. It's your microphone and speakers that mostly
affect the quality.
One of the best features of Skype is the price -
free, free is good. Skype is a product that I can recommend, and after using it
across international lines, it works, and it works well. "One of the major new
features in beta version 2 is Skype Video, free video calling between Skype
users.
Skype has partnered with a number of hardware companies,
including Logitech and Motorola, to bring Skype-certified accessories to the
market, including Webcams and Bluetooth headsets. Other new features include
avatars, sounds, and ring tones (available for purchase from Skype's Web site);
contact groups; and toolbars. The browser toolbar works with Internet Explorer
and Firefox: Skype recognizes phone numbers and Skype names on search results
pages, allowing one-click calling from the results page via Skype. The Outlook
toolbar consolidates your Outlook and Skype contacts, allowing you place Skype
calls to Skype users who have e-mailed you or call non-Skype users via
SkypeOut."
